How to clean out manure from a sheep barn can be accomplished in multiple manners. Factors to take into consider include:
- the size of the barn
- the equipment available to use
- where will the manure be stored
- will the sheep be relocated out of the barn while removing manure
- time commitments
What Equipment is Used to Remove Manure?
There are various types of equipment that can be used to remove sheep manure from inside a barn or coverall. The factors that are taken into consideration are the building dimensions and what equipment is on-hand and available to use. If needed, heavy equipment can be rented or custom work can be hired by a neighbouring farmer.
We also need to consider how the manure will be handled. Is it being placed on-site in the manure storage area or is it being hauled off-site?
In the following video, we have made use of a tractor with a loader because the bucket is what picks up the manure and removes it from the concrete base. Next, the bucket is unloaded into a dump wagon. Followed by the use of a second tractor which hauls the dump wagon to unload the full wagon onto the manure storage pile where it will be allowed to stay to further breakdown into compost.

When is the best time to remove sheep manure from barn?
Every farmer will make this decision based on their needs, their operation and at the times of year that works best. We schedule times around lambing in the spring and weaning in the summer. However, we also try to clean the barns in the Fall in preparation for the cold winter temperatures that we get. Staying organized and scheduling these managerial tasks improve planning this dirty task.
