Raising Sheep

Ambry Acres has been raising Sheep since 2019.

We raise two Breeds being Rideau Arcott and a Suffolk/Shepherd’s Choice Cross. These are a quiet docile breed that can be used as a dual-purpose sheep breed for both their meat and wool.

We have a ewe flock to market lamb operation that began with 20 ewes and have a total of 101 ewes as of 2020.

Sheep Flock
2020 Introduced 3 RAMS into our Flock

1 North County Cheviot and 2 Dorset

Housing

We house our flock inside a coverall that the previous owners designed for and operated a pig operation. It did not require many alterations allowing us to jump into raising sheep without too much difficulty.

Animals are tracked and a herd health plan is in place. This allows us to work closely with our veterinarian ensuring best practices are in place while raising healthy sheep.

6 Months Later; we have begun to expand again!

We raise our flock with care.

Feed is very important and we strive for the best.

As a result of the introduction of cover crops; our farmland grows feed in a sustainable manner.

Quality Feed Makes Quality Sheep

Round bale of hay in field

We feed dry hay.

Whole grain corn is fed ensuring the flock have sufficient energy for growth. Corn based distillers grain for protein. Mineral to achieve optimal breeding results and correct mineral deficiencies.

Our sheep flock are raised without hormones and growth implants. Antibiotics are used on farm only if an animal gets sick, similarly as the doctor prescribes you antibiotics whenever you are sick. Best practices ensure that there is a mandatory withdrawal time which is respected to be certain there is no trace of medicine in their system when an animal is being sent for processing.
