Locally Raised Poultry are Free Range. We have been raising chickens for meat and for the production of fresh daily eggs since 2018 on a consistent basis. We have been raising laying hens off and on since 1980.
Free Range Chickens enjoy plenty of fresh air and sunshine while maturing at their natural pace. We provide a large outdoor space for our laying hens. Allowing the flock to wander freely yet is fenced providing protection from neighbour dogs that appear spontaneously on the property.
Raising Laying Hens
We have had great success with raising Rhode Island Red Laying Hens. These hens lay brown eggs daily. They are friendly, calm and easy to approach.
Characteristics: The Reds are friendly chickens with a good nature. They are good pets for children, but they can get aggressive when annoyed (especially roosters). Rhode Island Reds are tough birds, resistant to illness, good at foraging and free ranging, and typically docile, quiet, and friendly.
The Rhode Island Red was developed as a dual-purpose breed, to provide both meat and eggs. Since about 1940, it has been selectively bred predominantly for egg-laying qualities, and the modern industrial Rhode Island Red is a layer breed. Rhode Island Reds have been used in the creation of many modern hybrid breeds, mainly due to the prolific egg laying abilities of the Rhode Island Red.

Where to Buy Hens?
Wondering where to buy laying hens? Local feed store and farmers are the main suppliers. Our preferred choice is to buy locally which are supplied by Frey’s Hatchery. Hatcheries include the choice of day old chicks or ready to lay hens.
